I went to El Palmeral in April 2012, and spent an absolutely fantastic week in the company of Mike and Julie, and Adrian and Bridget Plass. As busy clergy man, retreats are an essential part of staying fresh in ministry. Having been on a number of retreats in the UK, I decided to try Spain for a change. A weeks retreat at El Palmeral, including flights, was nearly as cheap as going on a retreat in the UK. However, the weather was better, the food was better, the bar was better, and the pool (despite being cool) was brill. The outdoor chapel was stunning, and there was a real sense of God in the place.
The hospitality is 5 star.

The hospitality is 5 star. The food is 5 star. The venue is 5 star. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. You know the phrase, ' you pay for what you get?'. This was worth every single penny, and will be saving up to go again next year. If there is nothing in the programme that Mike and Julie have put together that you like, give them a call and discuss your requirements. I'm sure they could sort something out that meets your needs. It would be a fantastic place to take clergy chapters, team ministries, or just go on your own. Why should clergy not treat themselves every now and again?
Go on, have a look at El Palmeral, try it out, treat yourself, and let God re-charge your batteries spiritually, physically and mentally. It so worked for me

What a beautiful place run by a beautiful couple! This is the perfect place to come if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful spot to get away and just 'be' with God, lovely people and yourself. A perfect balance of good conversation, food, wine and solitude - and of course creativity as I attended the songwriting retreat led by Noel and Trish Richards.

Very much enjoyed our stay in early May 2012. The food was excellent and we loved marmalade made from El Palmeral oranges and the scent of the lemon trees in the nearby orchard. We heard nightingales for the first time in our lives and saw a hoopoe.
Ours was a week of photography and spirituality. There was plenty to photograph both in the surroundings and in the lovely grounds where we stayed. Mike kindly took us to the sea, Elche and a nearby nature reserve. Brad Berglund, who led our few days together opened up a new way of taking photos which was exciting. The swimming pool would have been tempting had it been later in the year.

A lovely, peaceful place for a holiday, with a very warm welcome from hosts Mike and Julie. We've been twice, and we consistently enjoy the rhythm of morning and evening prayer, with the option of relaxing by the pool or going out to explore the surrounding area. Elche (20 minutes' drive) is an unsung gem of a place, as is Novelda (in the mountains) with its lovely Gaudi-inspired church and the Casa-Museo Modernista. The food and wine are good too!! Next time we hope to participate in a retreat led by Mike or Julie or one of their wide range of Christian friends. ๐Ÿ™‚

Beautiful peaceful gardens. Amazing home made fresh Spanish food every day a new dish. The rhythm of daily prayers and enjoying the presence of God. Wonderful caring hospitality. I am leaving El Palmeral feeling renewed, restored and revitalised in body soul and spirit. Huge thanks Julie for providing the perfect retreat.

As the gate closed behind me, I was immediately aware - again - of the overarching sense of peace that fills El Palmeral. It was my second visit and I really hope it won't be my last. This is a place that is steeped in prayer without being pious, allows for quiet and contemplation without detracting from the fun and just allows you to recharge your physical, emotional and spiritual batteries. Putting the house into compulsory quiet in the afternoon is quite literally a God-send. Mike and Julie had put in a lot of effort to make El Palmeral the haven that it is. I couldn't recommend it more highly to people looking for rest, sanctuary and spiritual contemplation.

I went on theย 'Photography and Spirituality' week in May 2012 with Brad Berglund - what a great concept, and a hugely stimulating place to do it. Can't recommend el Palmeral enough- I know it's a long way, but actually pretty quick to get to. Mike and Julie are extremely welcoming and their attention to detail meant that all were involved and 'together'. Two problems- staying up too late listening to nightingales, and eating too much!!

What a great place to be refreshed! We had wonderful hosts in Mike and Julie and experienced love, compassion and peace in the presence of God. We have to add that the food was absolutely brilliant!

Just back from a wonderful week with Bob Hartman as the retreat leader. He showed us how to bring Bible Stories alive. Mike and Julie are great hosts and made us feel very welcome which enabled us to relax, and be refreshed and renewed. Food was fantastic. The Bar was an added blessing! The swimming pool was greatly appreciated. We will certainly be returning to this Oasis.

A friend recommended El Palmeral to me. Travelling alone and with a love of photography, God and sunshine, it was perfect! The house is beautiful, Mike and Julie are wonderful hosts, and the morning and compline services are very special. I attended the photography retreat (23-27th October) led by Brad Berglund and enjoyed every minute. Can't wait to visit again.

The voluntary week was perfect for me. I found the rhythm and structure of the week a real blessing. For somebody who loves to work I found the achievement of a project fantastic. That said, morning and evening prayer without being overly pious, good food, afternoon quiet time, and meeting other lovely volunteers, amazing. Although February, the skies were blue with the odd fluffy cloud, perfect weather for a spot of gardening! Mike and Julie were the perfect hosts, and they even have a well stocked bar, around which we had some interesting conversations. Definitely recommend the voluntary week, and hopefully will return again.

Spent a wonderfully restorative time with Julie and Mike at this spiritual oasis. I received fantastic home-cooked Spanish food and was warmly welcomed. The perfect place to relax, meet with God in the sunshine and contemplate the journey ahead. I look forward to returning.
